What makes our ice premium ice?

What makes our ice premium ice is a question you really never ask until you find yourself working at an ice company.  What makes the ice used in packaged ice more premium than say that you freeze in your fridge or the stuff you get from ice machines in restaurants?
bags of ice
Premium ice?

Do we use special water?  We kind of do, meaning we take the very clean city water and run it through a bunch more filters to make it super clean.  We routinely have the ice lab tested to make sure it meets all food, health and safety standards.

Do we freeze the ice using some patented method?  The company that made the big ice machines likely has a few patents but we don't.  We just press on and like magic the machines start making ice.  To freeze the ice we use basically the same system as any freezer would.  It isn't really rocket science so no, we don't use some secret process to make premium ice.

Is our ice clearer than other ice?  On a good day when everything is working perfectly and the ice is fresh yes our ice should be clearer.  Unfortunately as anyone in the ice distribution game knows rarely does everything work perfectly so all we can really say is we do our best to keep the ice crystal clear.  When  ice is cloudy it doesn't mean it isn't clean, just means that the freezing process needs to be tweaked   Something as simple as the temperature outside changing can affect how water freezes.

Then why is it called premium ice?  Marketing, marketing and marketing.  Sure the water we use is a little cleaner than the tap water people drink.  Sure the machine is built specifically to make ice.  The main difference though between the cubed or tube ice we make at Columbia Ice and the stuff people make at home or get at restaurants is less external containments.  Our ice is bagged and sealed before we ever handle it.  When I say handle it, I mean handle the packaged bags of ice with washed hands, wearing gloves and a hair net.     This means less breathing on ice, less touching ice, less of everything that might contaminate the ice.

If this means our ice at Columbia Ice is premium ice then so be it,
